10 Truly Terrible Movies That Fanboys Insist Are Awesome

8. Resident Evil

Compared to the rest of Paul W.S. Anderson€™s filmography, the first Resident Evil film is a gem. Hell, it€™s even better than the majority of video game adaptations, which are generally awful. However, I€™d argue that doesn€™t make it a good or even wholly competent movie; rather, it just happens to be less terrible than most. Resident Evil is blandly generic, forgettable, and devoid of anything resembling depth or intriguing characterization, yet they€™re still pumping out sequels every few years. Can it please stop? In the interest of full disclosure, I haven€™t played any of the Resident Evil video games for a great length of time. But also, none of the films in this series ever convinced me I needed to. If the games are as awesome as I€™m told they are, then why keep sullying them with unnecessary sequels that fail to expand their narratives in an interesting way? Oh yeah, because they keep making money.

I recently received an MFA in screenwriting from the University of Texas-Austin, and I am a rabid fan of all things cinema. As much as I love movies, I might be starting to love TV even more thanks to shows like Breaking Bad, The Wire, and Game of Thrones. Currently I write and cohost a blog/podcast called Reel Fanatics. I'm from the Midwest, so I'm obligated to be obsessed with the Green Bay Packers. I'm also a direct descendant of the mountain man Jim Bridger. You can also follow me on Twitter - @ballsdontread.
