10 Awful Movies That Somehow Stole An Oscar

3. Death Becomes Her

Visual Effects (1992) All right, so not everything Meryl Streep has done is pure magic. This weird, dark slapstick movie about the perils of putting too much faith in one's looks and seeking out plastic surgery as the ultimate answer to happiness sounds like it would be a lot of fun. But it isn't. Instead, it's creepy and off-putting. The plot of the movie boils down to two older women both trying to look much younger to win over the affections of Bruce Willis. Again, that sounds good, but ends up being flat and repetitive, with most of the scenes hitching their wagons to broad catfights and overblown special effects. Those effects are pretty nifty, albeit a little garish. This is another one of those instances where you end up wishing that technical awards had their own separate show, simply so a movie like Death Becomes Her couldn't be advertised as an "Academy Award winner."
