The best movies that can be made are ones that are based off true events. It seems like every movie that's coming out these days has the "Based on a true story" mark thrown onto it for the sole purpose of drawing more viewers. In this case, the horrific events of some men (and an animal) are the reason that some of the legendary horror movies were made. Now, I would trade every movie ever made to be able to get the victims of these gruesome events back, but the legacy these characters led were forever immortalized in films that people love to watch. Some of these film adaptations are loosely based on the character, some are basically the same exact story, and some are just ideas that were created from real events. Whatever the situation, these are characters we will never forget. With that being said, let us start this tour of glorified death with an idea based off of real events....
10. Nightmare On Elm Street
First off, there isn't a specific serial killer that this movie is based off of, and that is one reason why it's number ten, but after doing some research I felt it was worthy of this list because it was something I had never even heard myself. Basically what inspired director Wes Craven to write this horror movie legend is a string of reports in the LA Times that he had read beforehand. Apparently there was a string of deaths with Cambodian immigrants that were terrified of going back to sleep. One of the immigrants had even gone as far as to go without sleep for a string of about a week, and after he had finally fallen asleep, he died that night with no reason for the death in the autopsy. It was discovered the sleeping pills he was being given he had spit out and he had coffee makers full of hot coffee in his closet that he had used to keep him up. Creepy eh? Although nobody was actually convicted of these deaths, the fact that people were dying in their sleep and were terrified to go to sleep beforehand makes this story worth of this list.
