4. The Shark From Jaws
Although a shark attack seems like an obvious event to make a movie off of, there was one certain attack in the early 1900s that sparked the idea for this movie. During a twelve day period in July, 1916, on the Jersey Shore there were a series of shark attacks that killed four people and injured one other. Because of a summer heat wave, more people were driven to the shore to cool off, and because of that and an increased number of sharks in the water, the attacks over that time were more frequent than normal. This event led to a series of shark hunts and began a national distrust of sharks, which led to the movie Jaws, and other negative portrayals of sharks in the media. The story made headlines of all the major newspapers across the country, and since then, we have never seen sharks in the same light. Our next killer is our only one that comes from before the twentieth century and his story is an interesting one...
