10. Scary Movie 5
Release Date: 2013 The absolute dregs. Scary Movie was reasonably funny, the first sequel was less so, the third was just poor and everything positive had gone completely by the time the fourth film hit the big screen in 2006 - so quite why a fifth is set for release next year is beyond reason. Malcolm D Lee, who made Soul Men and Undercover Brother (so he has previous) is in the director's chair, and the film - which promises to be a reboot of the series (oh goody!) will feature a host of "talent" in the same vein as the previous films in the series and a plot that riffs on Black Swan and countless haunted house tales. Sadly there's no return for Anna Faris, who was easily the best part of the franchise, with lead duties instead going to High School Musical's Ashley Tidsdale and appearances by Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen and Heather Locklear. So in many ways, it's the sad place where careers go after they're dead. The biggest problem here isn't the poor cast or even the predictably poor script, it's that the source is no longer worthy of spoof. The idea of such films is to parody something either at the height of its success or which lacks self-awareness in its devices and familiar features, and that boat has long since sailed for the horror genre. There's very little pleasure to be had in poking something with so little life left in it, and Scary Movie 5 might well just feel like drinking dirty dish-water. What do you think?
