10 Awful-Sounding Sequels That Have No Business Being Made

2. Triplets

Release Date: Unknown Despite an impressive, but extremely short-lived return to any kind of form in Dreamgirls, at absolutely no stage should anyone consider the addition of Eddie Murphy to a classic film as a reasonable excuse to release a sequel. The original Twins - made in 1988 for just $15 million - was a huge commercial hit, and quickly became one of the most fondly-remembered films of the 1980s, and a rare welcome foray into comedy for giant Austrian muscleman Arnold Schwarzenegger who starred alongside long lost brother Danny DeVito. The film's success came from the unlikeliness of that relationship - riffing on the odd-couple movie with the ridiculous conceit that these two chalk and cheese characters could be in any way related, and clearly the addition of Murphy is supposed to dial that effect up even further. Putting aside for the moment the potential for some pretty dangerous comedy (they're going to have to have a very clever script for it not to feel like a terribly cynical cash-in on racial difference), the decision to cast Murphy, whose comedy chops evaporated a long time ago is just poorly advised. It all just sounds awful - three actors with their best work behind them trading on a past success, and unfortunately probably tainting the original just a little bit in precisely the same way Blues Brothers 2000 did.
