10 Awful Trailers For Surprisingly Good Horror Movies
1. Hereditary
To paraphrase Morpheus from The Matrix, "Nobody can tell you what Hereditary is about. You have to see it for yourself."
All jokes aside, it's really difficult to explain what the plot of Ari Aster's magnum opus. Not even the trailer could do it justice!
To understand the issue with explaining the plot, let's break the down the trailer. It opens with Annie (Toni Collette) grieving for the recent loss of her mother. Annie tries to move on but becomes concerned when her daughter becomes distant and starts lopping off pigeon heads. After we see Annie's son smacking his face into a desk, a person bursting into flames, and a blue energy wave enveloping a hallway while a clucking sound repeatedly plays in the background, you probably thought, "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?"
If you found the trailer deeply confusing, please do not let that scare you off. Hereditary is provocative, original, and harrowing. It's so multi-layered, it'll encourage you to discuss its themes with others endlessly. Not only does Toni Collette give her best performance yet, it's one of the most visceral performances we've seen in horror in a long time.
