Just when you think that the babysitter horror genre had nothing new to offer, along cameThe Night Sitter, a colourful, blood-spattered, and all-round delightful horror experience.

Premiering on the festival circuit in 2018, it was written and directed by duo Abiel Bruhn and John Rocco and follows con artist Amber (Elyse Defour) posing as a babysitter to rob the home of an occult fanatic. Though the operation goes smooth at first, the night descends into a neon-drenched nightmare when one of the kids inadvertently uses one of their father’s artefacts to summon a trio of witches known as The Three Mothers.

With the witches intent on sacrificing the children and possessing the burglars, both sides must join forces to find a way to survive the night as they’re picked-off one by one.

From its cinematography comprised of bold and dazzling colours to a pulpy synth score reminiscent of Goblin meets John Carpenter, The Night Sitter is a film that takes plenty of inspiration from Italian Giallo cinema, particularly Argento’s Suspiria (the three witches being another nod to the horror classic).

A joyous and phantasmagoric treat, The Night Sitter is a genre love letter that horror fans will undoubtedly appreciate.
