6. Artemis Fowl
The Artemis Fowl series follows the adventures of the twelve-year-old genius Artemis Fowl and his encounters with the magical Fairy People. At first, Artemis and The People are enemies, but as Artemis’ character develops and changes, he assists The People in resolving issues with worldwide ramifications.
Many speculated that should this successful children’s book series ever be adapted into film, it could achieve the same levels of success as the Harry Potter series. But because it is on this list, you know that did not happen.
Despite Miramax finalising a screenplay in 2003, efforts at assembling the cast and crew was met with numerous cancellations and delays. Disney acquired the rights to the film in 2013, but also suffered delays until filming finally got underway in 2017.
When it was finally released on Disney+, it was torn to shreds by critics and angry fans of the series for its betrayal of the source material and over reliance on special effects. By trying to combine the first two books of the series into one film, audiences were left with a boring and overly complex film while Disney were left with a $125 million hole in their pocket.
