10 Bad Film Adaptations Of Great Books
7. Eragon
Christopher Paolini started writing his original ideas for Eragon when he was in his early teens and was heavily inspired by medieval stories and folktales. A year after self-publishing the book to little success, it was re-published under Alfred A. Knopf and was top of the New York Times Best Selling Children's Book list for 121 consecutive weeks.
The book's incredible popularity amongst younger readers caught the attention of 20th Century Fox and they purchased the film rights a year later. Production of the film went smoothly and the film made $250 million at the box office off of a $100 million budget. But although the film did well financially, it was hammered by the critics.
Eragon was one of the worst reviewed films of 2006, with only 16% of all reviews being positive towards the film. From its derivative story, generic world building and a severe lack of talent in key areas of its cast, there were very few positives to take from the film. Although Fox were satisfied with the returns made on the film, its critical failure led to the cancellation of any future films in the series.
