10 Bad Movies Oscar-Winning Directors Went On To Make

1. Alexander - Oliver Stone

Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
Pathe

The year 2004 was the battle of the historical epic. With Troy releasing a mere handful of months away from Oliver Stone's Alexander, the two were close enough that they could be easily compared, and the reason the latter sank while the former succeeded was undeniably clear.

Stone is known for his politically-charged narratives and meaty, dialogue-heavy plots, but here, everything is dialed up to eleven. It's lifeless and dull, lacking a spirit and a sense of fun, something that Troy had which helped that movie resonate much more with audiences than Alexander did.

At times, you'll feel like you're watching a documentary, such is the meticulous nature of its historical detail and exposition. You'll be craving an action scene, but they're far too intermittent, the film's ridiculously long runtime spreading scenes that possess any actual entertainment value far too thinly.

When all is said and done, the fact that Alexander received no less than four radically different cuts tells you all you need to know; Stone himself wasn't sure how to tell this story properly, and its as muddled and confusing as that would lead you to believe.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
