10 Badass Characters Inspired By Ridiculous Things
1. Wonder Woman Was Inspired By WWII Pin Up Girls
Wonder Woman is, rightfully, one of the most iconic superheroes of all time. Thanks to the brilliant talents of director Patty Jenkins and actor Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman was given a proper cinematic debut in 2016.
Her creator, William Moulton Marston wrote the character to support the women's suffrage movement. To form Wonder Woman’s personality, Marston borrowed from his real-life wife and his mistress. All three of them lived together for a time.
Nothing ridiculous about that. However, to create Wonder Woman’s appearance Marston quite literally turned to the pages of Esquire magazine. Specifically, he turned to the centerfold of the magazine. You see, Marston had an interest in erotic pin-up art of the time. He used it to differentiate Wonder Woman’s appearance from male superheroes such as Superman.
The look has stuck with her ever since.
