6. Sigourney Weaver - Lenny in The TV Set (2006)
The TV Set is an underrated gem from a few years back, staring David Duchovny as Mike Klein, a hardnosed writer trying to get his latest pilot (a comedy based on the aftermath of his brothers suicide) off the ground. The film itself is a brutally accurate look at the world of network television and the struggles a writer must fight through to stay true to his vision Its apparently based on the real life battles that faced Judd Apatow in his early days. By far the most memorable role in The TV Set is that of the Network President. Sigourney Weaver (the second Weaver to make the list although of no relation to Jacki as far as Im aware) delivers an absolute stellar performance as the viscously coldblooded Lenny, a woman transfixed on completely destroying Kleins personal tale of family loss and transforming it into a slapstick sitcom. Weaver has such a domineering presence and creates a character so authentic that you cant help but feel uncomfortable watching her confrontations with Klein. Interestingly, the role was originally intended for Ben Stiller, who had to pull out only weeks before filming started. I seriously question whether Lenny would have had the same intimidating aura with Stiller in the role; I envisage his performance more in line with his over-the-top Dodgeball and Happy Gilmore villains. No dialog was changed when Weaver took the gig, yet the words sound so damn natural coming from her mouth that youd never think to question them even when shes pushing for a show called Slut Wars to be made. The thought of this woman breathing down my neck gives me the willies.
