10 Banned Movies Now Considered Masterpieces

7. The Evil Dead

Clockwork Orange
New Line Cinema

One of Sam Raimi's best pieces of cinema, The Evil Dead is the spawn of nasty possession movies, furthering the work of The Exorcist and creating one of the most recognisable cult franchises of all time. Whilst Raimi is also responsible for emo dancing Toby Maguire in Spiderman 3, it's only fair to let him off for a moment - especially since he brought this grim supernatural-horror movie gem screeching into the world.

Functioning as the original "cabin in the woods" set up, we see a group of teenagers harassed by a demonic presence - where rather ideally for deadly supernatural forces, no one can hear the harried group scream, or come to their rescue. Of course, plenty of disgusting scenes soon play out, resulting in the film's notorious place as one of the most intense splatter movies of its kind. And a neat little spot on the ban list to this day for some countries.

As well as famously bringing H. P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon to the screen, The Evil Dead is exactly what is says on the tin: and has survived as a gruesome classic ever since its release.
