10 Behind The Scenes Reasons For Harry Potter Character Traits
1. Lucius Malfoy Hides His Wand Inside A Cane
Another unique character flourish for the movies that wasn't in the books, now, with Lucius Malfoy's (Jason Isaacs) wand being hidden inside an enchanted cane.
In various interviews, Jason Isaacs has confirmed that he had significant input on Lucius' final design, and especially his super-stylish concealed wand, which he himself asked for. Isaacs said:
"I complained... that I didn't have my own wand. I invented and designed my cane, that had a wand in it."
"I asked for a walking stick, which [Chamber of Secrets director] Chris Columbus first thought was because I had something wrong with my leg. I explained I wanted it as an affectation so I can pull my wand out [of the cane]. After a second's thought, he said, 'You know what, I think the toy guys are going to love you.' He was completely right."
Unfortunately, though, while shooting Chamber of Secrets, Isaacs failed to appreciate the heft and sharpness of the cane and caused his screen son Tom Felton a nasty hand injury:
"The very first scene that I shot was actually cut, it's on the deleted scenes. Draco touched something, and I used this cane and went, 'Don't touch anything, Draco.' But I didn't know how sharp the teeth were, they went right into little Tom's hands. And he looked up at me, and his eyes welled with tears, and I went, 'Tom, I'm so sorry, I didn't realise how sharp they were and how heavy it was,' and he went 'It's all right, it's good for the scene.'"
