10 Behind-The-Scenes Secrets Of MCU Movies
1. Asa Butterfield Was Marvel's First Choice To Play Spider-Man
At this point it's hard to imagine anyone other than Tom Holland playing the MCU's Spider-Man, his performance is basically perfect after all - with just the right balance of awkwardness and quips.
The casting purpose for this iteration of the character was a little more contested than one might believe though - Charlie Plummer, Matthew Lintz, Timothée Chalamet, and Asa Butterfield were all in the running for the role; and, for a long time, Butterfield seemed to be guaranteed the role. Fans were even disappointed when the news broke that the actor was out of the running.
Another strange element is that it was Sony who favoured Holland, while Butterfield was Marvel's pick. Butterfield may have veered too close to Tobey Maguire's overwhelmingly awkward portrayal of the character, so personally I'm actually glad Sony got their way (in this very specific instance).
The actor would still make for a good superhero, a Robin maybe, just not Spider-Man. He's said (in an interview with Flickering Myth) that he prefers DC anyway.
