Kevin Feige had wanted to get his hands back on Spider-Man for years, and when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended up being both a commercial and critical disappointment, talks of a deal between the two studios began. Leaked emails provided some insight into how it all went down, with Sony financing the movies, but Marvel taking full creative control. With Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, characters from those movies will also appear in his solo outing in 2017. The plan is to take Peter back to high school, with three or four movies focusing on his time there. However, this deal also shows both how clever and ruthless Feige is. With Sony receiving a negative reaction to every announcement they made (whether it was Venom or a female-led spinoff), he found the right time to strike and got what he wanted: Spider-Man back home.
