Who knew Channing Tatum had this kind of performance in him? Bennett Miller's cold, detached true crime thriller is a chilly masterpiece, elevated substantially by killer performances from Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and especially Steve Carell.

Though its Kubrick-esque style and tone might make the film too offputtingly bleak for some, it does result in a singular, endlessly fascinating examination of an ill mind, with Carell's intensely disturbing, Oscar-nominated portrayal proving absolutely unforgettable.

It's hardly a feel-good hit you're going to want to watch very often, but for fans of serious-minded, visceral cinema, it's one of the best of its recent kind.
