4.  Jyn’s Connection To The Death Star - Star Wars: Rogue One

The ‘Joker is Robin’ theory might’ve been debunked, but one instance this year in which the fervent fanboys and fangirls were actually right was their hypothesising over the role of Jyn Erso in forthcoming Star Wars spinoff Rogue One. Who is she, they wondered, and why is she so central to the story? And most of all, what is her connection to the Death Star?

Then Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen let it slip that he would be playing none other than Jyn’s father, Galen Erso. It was later confirmed that Galen would be a scientist, and fans started postulating that he may be the mind behind the Death Star. For once their over-thinking paid off when the synopsis for James Luceno’s spinoff prequel book, Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, was released providing more information on Jyn and her family’s background and hinting that Galen definitely has something to do with the creation of the Death Star. The final trailer for Rogue One, released in mid-October, further highlighted Mikkelsen’s role as Galen confirming him as the (seemingly reluctant) architect of the Death Star and explaining why Jyn’s personal connection to him would make her the perfect leader of a rebellion setting out to steal the Death Star’s blueprints.

It seems that sometimes – just sometimes – we should put a little more faith in fan theories because, as is the case with Rogue One, they might just turn out to be true.
