10 Best 2021 Films You Probably Haven't Seen
5. Supernova
In a fair world, Harry Macqueen's tender, devastating drama Supernova would've been a major awards contender earlier in the year, though despite strong critical acclaim it largely fell upon deaf ears.
Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth star as Tusker and Sam, a middle-aged man suffering through early-onset dementia and his partner of 20 years respectively.
As Tusker's condition worsens, the pair ventures off on a road trip across England to meet up with friends and family. What follows is a deeply affecting, often painful, but also fitfully funny, warm, and relatable romantic drama.
It isn't a spoiler to say that Supernova is sure to leave audiences fighting away tears, largely thanks to the persuasiveness and dignity of Tucci and Firth's performances, which are arguably their respective best to date (especially in the case of Tucci).
Despite being hardly the most unique premise for a movie and one rife with over-sentimental potential, Macqueen's delicate work as writer-director ensures not a single emotional note ever rings false.
Just make sure you've got something junky and lightweight ready to watch afterwards, because you'll probably need it.
