10 Best "All Hope Is Lost" Moments In Movie History

1. The End - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back's downer ending is so famous that it's become the de facto, textbook example of the darker second installment in a movie trilogy.

And those final 10 minutes sure are a doozy - Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has his hand chopped off by Darth Vader (David Prowse) moments before learning that Vader is his father, and though Leia (Carrie Fisher) soon enough has him picked up, they only barely escape being caught by Vader's Star Destroyer.

And on top of this, Han (Harrison Ford) has been frozen in carbonite and handed over to Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch), ensuring that the heroes are collectively left at their lowest point for the entire trilogy.

It's certainly one hell of an enticing setup for Return of the Jedi, and epitomised that massive Hollywood blockbusters didn't need to end in supremely upbeat fashion to leave mass audiences heading home happy.
