10 Best Animated Horror Movies

9. Belladonna of Sadness

Fears Of The Dark
Mushi Production

This one couldn't be further from Monster House whilst still sticking to the "animated horror" template, but the underrated cult curio Belladonna of Sadness nonetheless earns itself a place on this list thanks to its outsized influence on horror cinema both cartoon and live-action.

Dark and unsettling but vividly beautiful in places, this 1973 slice of psychedelia has a clear influence of the likes of Midsommar and Hagazussa and boat the hazy, dream-like atmosphere of an A24 horror.

The tragic tale of a peasant who is accused of witchcraft after an assault leaves her traumatized, this hypnotic horror immerses the viewer in the perspective of its troubled protagonist and encourages the audience to empathise with her ordeal as her mental state deteriorates.

It's a stunning film, but also a heavy and difficult bit of viewing for some animation fans, so be sure to watch this one with an awareness of its sharp edge and difficult thematic elements.
