10 Best Animated Movie Sequels
3. The Incredibles 2
The Incredibles 2 had a high bar to meet, both because it followed in the footsteps of the commercially and critically successful first film, released a full 14 years earlier, and because writer Brad Bird refused to consider a sequel unless 'it could be better than the first'.
It turns out spending all that time on it paid off and the results really didn't disappoint! It's great to see a sequel picking up immediately after its predecessor, meaning there were no gaps in time for viewers to fill and it was easy to slip back into loving the characters and what they were getting up with very little exposition.
Following the abolition of the Superhero Relocation Program, Elastigirl gets her moment in the sun while she tries to support her now financially needy family through secret superhero work, much like Mr Incredible in the first film. Helen Parr is a relatable character for all ages and is a great protagonist for this sequel.
Fabulous story-telling and an intricate plot twist feature in this move, which you don't always see in animated films that are all-too-often perceived as 'simple movies' for kids, making The Incredibles 2 well-deserving of an Oscar-nomination.
