Miyazaki is unquestioned face of Studio Ghibli. However in 2013, the underrated voice of that company, Isao Takahata, may well have made the greatest movie to ever come out of Ghibli with The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Now a lot of people may take umbrage with this and will quickly mount a counter point but ultimately its a discussion that will never reach a consensus agreement. Choosing a Ghibli movie is impossible. Its like having an argument over what the best ice cream flavour is. Look, the Academy Awards do not matter in any way shape or form. But when The Tale of Princess Kaguya lost to Big Hero 6 last year, that one did sting a little. Thats not a knock on Big Hero 6 at all, its just a testament to how wonderful this Studio Ghibli film really is. It follows the life of a bamboo cutter and his wife who find a tiny girl growing inside a shoot of bamboo, they take her home and raise her where she becomes a princess. Its a tale of magic realism and mysticism, of wealth and love, family and friends and its better than Big Hero 6. Drawn with exquisite watercolour minimalism and awash with pastel colours that mirror old Japanese artwork, theres true beauty in this films simplicity. Instantly timeless, The Tale of Princess Kaguya reminds you occasionally of Oliver Postgates inimitable style, and praise cant really get much higher than that for an animated work.
