7. Armageddon (1998)
If you want to watch a lot of things explode, a Michael Bay film is usually a good shout; the first five minutes of Armageddon promise this is Bay in full force. Fragments of meteors smash into and decimate New York City, heralding the arrival of a meteor 'the size of Texas' that will smash into the Earth, wiping out the entire human race like the dinosaurs. Unless, one team of rag-tag everyday, honest, uber-American workers can stop it.
Yes, the plot's paper thin and overblown all at once, but you just need to stop thinking about it. This is a spectacle film through and through, designed only to create utter mayhem for you to relish in. This unbridled madness is what ensured Armageddon has endured as a cult hit even now, despite being critically panned upon release.
Armageddon is not a smart movie, nor is it narratively great; the emotional "love-story" at the core is so corny, and the tone flits from from disaster movie to comedy to power fantasy to sci-fi and back again with gleeful abandon. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a simple thrill, with explosions aplenty, this popcorn movie has you covered. Just turn your brain off.
