10 Best B-Movie Horrors From The '80s
1. Rawhead Rex (1986)
Taking the top spot on this list is the first Clive Barker property to receive a film adaption. 1986's Rawhead Rex is touted by Barker to be a movie "so bad" that he'd stipulate personally overseeing all subsequent adaptions of his work.
The movie tells of a small village in rural Ireland that is suddenly set upon by Rawhead: an ancient demon freed from centuries of entrapment underground and thirsty for blood.
is Rawhead Rex really THAT bad? The short answer is no... although sometimes the movie's budget constraints are obvious, particularly in the creature design. Otherwise, Rawhead Rex is a perfectly enjoyable monster B-Movie.
The movie's shining aspect is its setting; a dreary, isolated village just outside Dublin. It adds an undeniable atmosphere of dread and fear to the film, with a creature that at times might seem laughable.
Everyone here does the best with what they're given, resulting in the film having some rather impressive set pieces for a small Irish production. A caravan park is destroyed, cars explode and a church is sent up in flames, all quite something if one can get past a few flaws.
The acting at times can be hammy, and as mentioned, Rawhead's design leaves a lot to be desired. But It's a rare snapshot of an Irish 80s horror movie... Perhaps the only one.
