Who would have thought anyone would need one ensemble movie uniting the close to decrepid stars of the Golden Age of action movies, let alone two? But Hollywood answered the question no-one was really asking with a dream team-up of Sly Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Arnie, Bruce Willis and a host of other action heroes, ranging from the iconic (Chuck Norris), to the modern (Jason Statham and Liam Hemsworth). For The Expendables, and its sequel(s), the bad-ass appeal is all about the cast, and the unholy alliance of so many of the Action Movie Hall of Fame , as well as the way the films channel the no-holds-barred approach to action movie film-making that many thought had died with the 90s. Who cares about plot or character development when you have muscle and silly one-liners, after all? But even if we judge The Expendables in more conventional critical terms, there's no doubting the clout of the team - almost each and every one of them is royalty, and the many probable sequels will likely trade on the fact long after the biggest stars of the franchise are replaced by their poorer, less expensive replacements.
