10 Best Benicio Del Toro Movie Performances
3. Jerry Sunborne - Things We Lost In The Fire (2007)
If this list has proven anything, it's that Benicio del Toro is at the height of his powers when portraying broken, disillusioned men, battling their inner demons and attempting to escape their darkened past. Never has the actor better captured this idea than with his role as Jerry Sunborne in the criminally underrated drama Things We Lost in the Fire.
Jerry is a heroin addict who, following the death of his best friend Brian (David Duchovny), moves in with Brian's wife Audrey (Halle Berry) in hopes of battling his addictions and the grief brought on by their loss. Growing close to Brian's kids and struggling to remain sober, Jerry begins to open up about his troubles and confront the idea of living a normal and peaceful life in the future.
In the role, del Toro is utterly hypnotising, stealing every scene he finds himself in and anchoring the film when it begins to tip into over-the-top melodrama territory. Fearless in its execution, the role shows an actor in full control of his craft, able to envelope the audience into his journey, and it stands as one of the actor's most compelling and powerful performances.
