Robert Eggers delivered an insanely good psychological thriller in his second feature film. The Lighthouse stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as two "wickies" that slowly lose their grip on reality the longer they are forced to maintain a lighthouse on a small island.

The movie has plenty of unsettling scenes, funny moments, and mysterious elements. One of the more interesting things about The Lighthouse is the way in which Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blacshke decided to shoot it. They used antique lenses and filmed in 1.19:1 ratio to reflect the time in which it takes place: the late 1890s.

It often seems as if the footage was photographed over a hundred years ago, and has been on a shelf until now. The incredible visuals aren't the only great thing about it, though. Both Pattinson and Dafoe provide stunning performances, among the best of their careers. That, combined with a stellar script and direction, makes it a must-see film that is sure to stand the test of time.
