10 Best Booze-Guzzling Movie Characters

1. Withnail (Richard E. Grant) - Withnail & I

Jeff Bridges The Big Lebowski
Handmade Films

Richard E. Grant’s turn as the all-guzzling, poetry-reciting old soak has become ingrained in the hearts of film fans. An instant cult classic, it is the performance by which all drinking movie characters are judged. My God, the man could drink. Withnail imbibed lighter fluid, every type of cider, whiskey, and beer available and, of course, famously demanded "the finest wines known to history - we want them here and we want them now."

Stumbling and staggering through the demise of 'swinging sixties' London as his artistic ethos is compromised then drowned by a succession of failed auditions, Withnail finds a great drinking partner in Uncle Monty, and the partying transfers from gloomy London to rural Penrith.

The ultimate boozehound, Withnail is a terrible coward who hides behind his alcoholism to protect himself from his failed career as a thespian. But boy do we love him.

As fate would have it, Grant was actually a teetotaller having an intolerance to the booze.

N.B- Students beware, matching Withnail drink for drink is a recipe to A and E.
