10 Best British Films Of 2015

1. Ex Machina

And finally, the best British film of 2015 has to be Alex Gardland€™s unsettling sci-fi feature Ex Machina. With an impressive cast including Domnhall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander, this was an enthralling directorial debut from the ever-impressive Garland, who previously penned the scripts for Dredd, 28 Days Later and Never Let Me Go. With Ex Machina, he tackles the murky moral world of Artificial Intelligence. Domnhall Gleeson effortlessly portrays the everyman Caleb, a lowly desk jockey for a massive search engine company, whose big boss (Nathan, played mesmerisingly by Oscar Isaac as a twisted Steve Jobs-alike) invites him to his private remote facility to help with his latest game changing project €“ creating artificial life. He€™s tasked with testing Ava (Alicia Vikander), a half-finished robot with a highly intelligent operating system. Could she, Nathan asks, pass for human? Caleb embarks on some casual conversations with Ava, and sparks (metaphorical ones) soon begin to fly. Vikander and Gleeson have such brilliant chemistry that it's difficult to look away. All of this, Garland writes and directs with such attention to detail. He encourages you to deduce what you can from every sentence. It's often difficult to tell who's in charge of the situation, because the script is so terrifically ambiguous. And, of course, there€™s more going on than meets the eye, and the movie descends from bizarre romance into noir-ish thriller territory towards the end. It€™s a triumph of a movie, and if you haven€™t seen it already, you really should. What's your favourite British film of 2015? Let us know in the comments...
