Almost David Mamet's entire filmography is, in one way or another, associated was ith the art of the con. It's just as well, then, that he discovered the work of Ricky Jay and often cast the late actor. In his directorial debut, Mamet finds pop psychiatrist Lindsay Crouse suddenly thrust into the world of a professional con man (Joe Mantegna). At first. she's amused, then aroused, but soon it becomes clear things aren't what they seem. In con man movies - when are they?

Though the mechanics of the con at work at the heart of House of Games becomes apparent early on, especially for connoisseurs of the genre, but it's still a joy to watch the grift unfold. What separates Games from other con men films is its controversial take on rape - timely now more than even at the time of its release.

Mamet has since grown more conservative in his thought, but at least here his female character is shown reclaiming power. Today's Mamet has written a play satirizing the #metoo movement that has been largely excoriated in the press. One wonders what he'd do with House of Games redux.
