Even before moving on from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Will Smith's ambition was starting to show.

And he first demonstrated he had talent to back up all that swagger with his performance in the adaptation of John Guare's play, which in turn was based on the real-life account of con man David Hampton. Hampton befriended and charmed his way through New York's elite, convincing many of them he was the son of actor Sydney Poitier.

Smith is aided on by veterans Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing (and a young J.J. Abrams, oddly), but it's his show to steal. And though we are given little behind the facade of the Hampton-like character, Smith's empathetic eyes and tragic desperation for some sort of approval is genuinely heartbreaking.
