10 Best ‘Dead And I Know It’ Moments In Zombie Movie History

8. Ed - Shaun Of The Dead

Day Of The Dead
Universal Pictures

There are heroic deaths a-plenty in the zombie horror subgenre, but none of them quite like Ed and Shaun’s tearful goodbye in Edgar Wright’s 2004 zom-rom-com extraordinaire.

In the basement of the local pub, Shaun sits hopelessly with his girlfriend Liz and bitten best friend Ed. After briefly discussing how they might all commit suicide with only two shotgun shells, they realise that they aren’t trapped after all and can use the keg-lift to get out onto the street.

Shaun promptly goes to help Ed onto the lift so the three of them can escape together, to which a heavily bleeding Ed responds that he might just stay as he would only slow them down. With his charming signature humour, Ed makes Shaun laugh one last time before sending him away- jokingly responding to professions of love from his best friend and Liz.

It’s a true class act from a well-loved character, made even better by the fact that in the end we see even after death he is still partially himself, his zombified body chained up in Shaun’s shed playing video games forever.
