With such a small central cast consisting of just four main characters, it was always going to be emotional when one of them bit the dust in Dawn of the Dead.
Roger delivers on this promise of a sad demise when, towards the ending of the film, he processes his slow march toward death after being bitten whilst out clearing zombies.
Roger and his fellow ex-SWAT friend Peter are fast favourites in the movie, breaking away from their unethical colleagues and establishing themselves as badass, moral characters. When Roger finds himself getting sicker and sicker from his bites, he makes Peter promise to kill him if he turns.
He knows that he is going to die, but what makes his little talk with Peter more emotional is that he seems convinced that there is some way he can make sure he doesn’t turn. Insisting that he’ll “try not to” let himself become one of the living dead, it’s interesting that he’s still holding on to hope that he’ll have some choice in it.
This makes it all the more upsetting when he eventually emerges as a sentient corpse from beneath the sheets, and stares Peter dead on as his mate is forced to kill him. All the while, a messy broadcast is playing from the TV where frustrated presenters argue over remaining logical when really people will always remain emotional, human. It just hammers home how naive and pointless Roger's hope was.
