8. Little Bill - Unforgiven

"I'll see you in Hell, William Munny."

Clint Eastwood's farewell to the genre sees him portray Will Munny, an ageing killer who comes out of retirement to fulfil one last contract. Unfortunately for Will, the town of Big Whiskey is watched over by town sheriff Little Bill (Gene Hackman), who detests outlaws and the other such legends of the west. While conducting their business in the town, Will's partner Ned (Morgan Freeman) is captured, tortured and killed by Little Bill.

Enraged, Munny fearlessly enters the town saloon looking for revenge. After gunning down the owner, Munny makes his intentions clear and massacres the patrons. One wonders if Munny is that fast or if everyone else is inept with the way he shoots through such overwhelming numbers.

Gunning down Bill's deputies, he saves the sheriff for last. Disarmed and defenceless, the terrified Bill laments that his dream of building a house for his golden years will never come true. Without a hint of sympathy, Munny blows him away point blank and leaves.

After years of trying to be nice, the real William Munny came out to play here. As vicious and scary as his reputation implied, Munny decimated Bill and everything he stood for without breaking a sweat. A suitably enraged ending to one of cinema's greatest westerns.
