10 Best Directors Who Haven't Won An Oscar

8. Sofia Coppola

Bursting onto the scene with her debut film, The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola immediately distanced herself from her peers. A few short years later, she wrote, directed, and produced Lost In Translation.

That film would go on to be nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Yet, it would sadly go home empty-handed. In the decade or so since then, Coppola has become one of our generation's most vibrant and unpredictable filmmakers. Whether she's collaborating with Bill Murray on his A Very Murray Christmas special for Netflix or writing and directing the intricately plotted The Beguiled, she continues to amaze and redefine her own work.

She remains the first and youngest woman ever to be nominated for Best Director and last year became the first-ever American woman to win the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Her more recent work has been consistently overlooked by the Academy but here's hoping that this wrong can be righted before it's too late.
