10 Best Directors Who Haven't Won An Oscar

6. Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright Baby Driver
Universal Pictures

You know when you've seen an Edgar Wright film.

Wright's visual language is such a distinctive form of visual and cinematic comedy that its impossible to miss. He got his start making taught, incredibly smart genre send-ups like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. In recent years, he has moved away from his traditional comedic avenue a bit, exploring more dramatic depths while still applying his trademark visual style.

His most recent film, Baby Driver, is a wonderful example of how Wright adapts to the genre he's in. Where Shaun and Fuzz were distinct send-ups of their respective genres, Baby Driver is a sincere car-chase action film done with all the same love and attention and it works shockingly well.

In a world full of comedic directors more interested in having the camera remain as still as possible to capture whatever improv the stars can come up with, Wright is a breath of fresh air. He can get a laugh solely off of a single camera move or make us feel for a character with a single push-in. He understands the language of cinema in a very particular way and has been consistently delivering great films for the past fifteen years now.

And he's never even been nominated.
