10 Best Directors Who Haven't Won An Oscar
3. Alfred Hitchcock
The master of suspense himself was ridiculously underappreciated in his time. Audiences loved him, but the critics of the day seemed to mostly treat his films as entertainment for the masses and little more. Films that are now viewed as some of the greatest ever made, such as Vertigo, were once absolutely despised. Vertigo was even pulled from rotation at one point for over a decade because it was widely viewed as a flop.
Though nominated on four different occasions for Best Director, Hitchcock never did get his gold. This is especially ludicrous when considering just how big of an impact he had on cinema at large. Terms he coined, such as MacGuffin, and his now-infamous lecture on the difference between suspense and surprise are now universal parts of film.
For Psycho and Vertigo alone, the man should have had at least two Best Director Oscars sitting on his mantle. Instead, he never even had a one.
