10 Best Documentary Movies Of The Last Decade
8. Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (2017)
Throughout the history of cinema, there have been some production stories that have ended up being more compelling than the film itself. One notorious case was 1999 biopic Man On The Moon, which starred Jim Carrey as comedy legend Andy Kaufman. Though the film garnered a mixed reception and underwhelming performance upon release, Carrey was lauded for his Golden Globe-winning performance.
During this performance, however, Carrey maintained that the spirit of Kaufman possessed him. He refused to break character throughout production, and – in the spirit of Kaufman’s style of humour – relished in antagonising the rest of the cast and crew when the cameras weren’t rolling.
Twenty years later, this behind-the-scenes footage was released by Universal, and Carrey’s performance would become the subject of Netflix documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.
Watching this film is like uncovering a lost part of film history. The footage paints a strange bubble where fantasy and reality collide but where the drama is real. Additionally, a retrospective from Carrey himself provides some extra depth to what this performance meant to him as well as trying to make sense of what was happening in his head at that time. The result is a fascinating viewing experience.
