10 Best Examples Of Movies With A ‘Chekhov’s Gun’
6. The Lost Boys – Antlers And Fence Post
Early in the movie, Michael and Sam look round their Grandpa’s house and make fun of his taxidermy collection. Grandpa is also shown to be repairing parts of his house, including building a fence in the garden with some large wooden posts.
Portrayed as a slightly odd, but generally harmless old man, his assortment of stuffed dogs and beavers appear to enhance this persona. The film does a very good job of highlighting the other characters, making Grandpa seem like nothing more than background entertainment, who knows little of what is really going on in the town.
The benefit to Grandpa’s strange hobby is reaped in the climactic battle, when Michael defeats David by impaling him on a pair of deer antlers on one of the mounted animal heads. Head vampire Max also meets his match with the old man’s help, after Grandpa unexpectedly crashes through a wall with his Jeep and one of the huge fence posts flies off the hood of the vehicle, impaling the demonic creature and saving the day.
