7. I Spit On Your Grave

The most uncompromising exploitation movie you’ll ever see, I Spit On Your Grave’s scenes of graphic violence – against men as well as women – are presented in a stark, no frills manner, which only adds to the viewer’s discomfort.

Prohibited from using flashy camerawork and a pounding soundtrack by his film’s low budget, director Meir Zarchi had to rely on scant resources while shooting and his picture is more effective for it. Rather than distance the viewer from the events taking place onscreen with a stylized look and a blizzard of cuts, the film’s raw, unpolished look makes the violence even more unsettling.

After picketing the movie on its original release, feminist Julie Bindel changed her mind in later years and claimed the picture was more feminist “albeit in a purely accidental way” than the Oscar winning The Accused, which starred Jodie Foster as a rape victim. “The revenge meted out in ISOYG is something men should fear,” she wrote. “It does not rely on the law of the land but on a woman being pushed too far and deciding enough is enough.”
