10 Best Female Movie Characters Of 2014

8. Sam Thomson - Birdman

Although she played the eponymous Green Goblin victim, Gwen Stacy, in this year's Amazing Spider-Man 2 (a character who's quite awesome in her own right), Emma Stone also played a much more intimidate and impressive role in Alejandro González's Birdman. In the film she portrays the daughter and personal assistant of Riggan Thomson (played by Michael Keaton), a washed-up actor searching for a comeback on Broadway following his star-making stint as a superhero named Birdman in three blockbuster movies. While Riggan is on a quest "to do some work that actually means something," Sam is constantly there to be the pessimistic voice in his ear. In one of the most memorable scenes of the film she tears her father's "good work" to shreds in an emotional and extended monologue. "Let's face it Dad, you are not doing this for the sake of art. You are doing this because you want to feel relevant again," she proclaims. "You're doing this because you're scared to death, like the rest of us, that you don't matter. And you know what? You're right! You don't! It's not important okay?! You're not important, get used to it!" Stone delivers a memorable, self-deprecating performance that is unlike anything that the young actress has ever given.
