Edge Of Tomorrow (subsequently marketed with the tagline Live Die Repeat) stands out as one of the most downright entertaining sci-fi movies of 2014. The film is a persistently fun and shockingly emotional futuristic take on Groundhog Day, which has Tom Cruise playing against his usual type as a coward whose destiny is to save mankind from aliens. The film also features a strong female role in the form of Emily Blunts character, Sergeant Rita Vrataski, the Angel of Verdun (or Full Metal Bitch behind her back). She's tough as nails and ultimately teaches Cruise's character to be a proper soldier. For a long time Blunt seemed to be forced to play the token love interest in either lackluster romantic subplots that take up precious screen-time or the prize to be won in films that are, on the face of it, about the central romance but merely tell their story unequivocally from the males point of view. The fact that she can break out of that is a good thing. That the film wasn't a whopping success, is not. Studio execs may get nervous and start thinking that audiences dont really want strong women in our blockbusters. Which is obviously not the case.
