The day of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (played by Ben Affleck) returns home to find that his wife Amy (played by Rosamund Pike) is missing. Her disappearance receives massive press coverage, as Amy was the inspiration for her parents' popular Amazing Amy children's books. Suspicions arise that Nick murdered her, and his discomfited behavior is interpreted by the media as characteristic of a sociopath. Amy is an interesting character because of the emotional roller-coaster she sends the audience on. At first you feel sympathetic, you watch as her husband "uses" her for sex, treats her with indifference and, on at least one instance, lashes out violently at her. However, it's suddenly learn that Amy isn't the innocent victim you've all been led to believe. Turns out that she has actually kidnapped herself just to see her husband pay for the crime. And this isn't the first time this has happened (she also has an ex-boyfriend who is now branded a sex offender due to her untruthful accusations). Her actions throughout the film show that Amy is less of a sociopath and more of a real life T-X; she clearly understands emotions and how they work, but whether she ever actually feels them isn't clear.
