10 Best Film Directors With Less Than 5 Films

7. Damien Chazelle

Lady Bird Greta Gerwig Saorsie Ronan
Sony Pictures Classics

The youngest Oscar winner for Best Director in history has already made waves for combining his love of music and cinema into a distinctive career that is just getting started. Although his feature debut Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench landed to a lukewarm response, it was his next feature Whiplash that exploded as one of the best received indie films in recent years.

A simplistic concept of a determined drummer conflicting with his imposing and domineering teacher was utilised to a great affect as Whiplash manages to keep a lightning pace with fantastic performances and superb editing. The film was such a success that it allowed Chazelle the creative freedom to make La La Land, an epic ode to Hollywood, music and those that dream.

Damien Chazelle has found a comfortable niche in telling stories about music and about ambition as his follow-up First Man proved. A somewhat underrated drama about Neil Armstrong's journey to the moon.

Chazelle has a deft talent for portraying obsessed individuals with enough humanity that we can root for them while we watch them spiral into their goals and lose themselves.
