10 Best Film Remakes Of All Time
5. True Grit (2010)
Here’s another case where both films are great. True Grit was a late Western, arriving long after classics like The Searchers, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and The Magnificent Seven. The genre was in its decline by this point, but True Grit remains a classic and was the only time that John Wayne ever won an Oscar for his acting.
The story follows a teenage girl seeking revenge for the murder of her father, and who hires legendary U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn to find the murderer. The film eschewed typical Western tropes by having a young girl as the protagonist and challenged Western women stereotypes through her.
But the modern True Grit is a masterpiece. Written and directed by the Coen brothers, the film pushes even harder against Western tropes, reflecting on violence, revenge and the Western genre as a whole. The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and was lauded for its excellent acting, directing and sets, and is destined to be looked back on as one of the best post-modern Western films.
