Former music video director David Fincher really announced himself as somebody to watch on film right from the title sequence of his sophomore effort Se7en. The unsettling scratchy images of the film's killer John Doe's obsessive behaviour were made extra-uncomfortable being backed by a remix of Nine Inch Nails' industrial hit Closer. This would kick off not only a career of exploring dark obsessives for Fincher, but also an opportunity to provide more film music for NIN's Trent Reznor. Reznor was first hired to work on a film score by Mark Romanek, who had directed the video for Closer, on creepy Robin Williams thriller One Hour Photo. Reznor's work was not deemed a good fit for the film in the end and Romanek opted for a score from German new wave keyboardist Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek instead. Nevertheless, working on One Hour Photo, material for which appeared on Nine Inch Nails' Still, gave Reznor the confidence to accept Fincher's offer to work on his Facebook film. Working with producer and programmer Atticus Ross, a collaborator with NIN and How to Destroy Angels, Reznor delivered an innovative, darkly ambient score that won critical acclaim and the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Score. Reznor has continued to work with Fincher, providing music for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (another Golden Globe nomination) and the upcoming Gone Girl. The former featured a version of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song produced by Reznor and Ross for Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman Karen O, somebody who has a decent line in film composing herself...
