10 Best Films By 2013's Most Highly Praised Directors

6. Alfonso Cuaron - Children Of Men

The seven year interval between Cuaron's last feature and Gravity has been tantalizing for movie buffs because his last film was one of the best of the decade. The Mexican visionary had directed the gems A Little Princess, Y Tu Mama Tambien, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, when he released his futuristic dystopian masterpiece Children of Men in 2006. Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor and a host of superb actors appear in this transcendent humanist tale about a society that has not welcomed a newborn child in 18 years. When one of the lead characters is found to be pregnant, she becomes a warring, divided humanity's most valuable asset, and it's up to Theo (Clive Owen) to protect her. The film functions as a shrewd political commentary with many scenes shot like newsreel footage, a tense white-knuckler, and an explosive character drama with moments of pure awe and wonder.
