The introduction of this character was a major point throughout the connected films leading up to his debut. He was built up to such an extent that when he finally arrived as the primary antagonist of Infinity war, he felt like a familiar presence, despite his most extensive appearance being a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy. The character needed to live up to the expectations built of him, and not only did that happen, but he even exceeded them.

Thanos was a villain with a goal to destroy half of the life in the universe, yet the motive and emotional core presented behind him was uncomfortably valid. He had a real motive that was backed up by legitimate belief and commitment, which instantly made him three-dimensional.
